The bot checks under the mask

That Halloween ad looks frighteningly good. Is the product?

Don’t get bot hurt. Get bot even.

Bot Talk

Great mask. Shame about the delivery.

That lifelike Halloween mask in your feed might deliver a different kind of scare.

British online-safety organization Get Safe Online warned last week about social media ads promoting “hyper-realistic” silicone masks at suspiciously low prices.

Working with scam-checking company Ask Silver, it cited customer reviews describing cheap plastic masks that looked little like the advertised products—or orders that never arrived.

Researchers cited in the warning believe many of the videos were created or enhanced with AI.

The mask moves with the wearer’s face. The skin looks real. The price looks friendly.

The special effects may be doing more work than the product.

Human x Bot

Put the bot on detective duty

The mask is seasonal. The shopping problem isn’t.

That dress, foundation or miracle gadget in your feed deserves the same scrutiny. Is the ad showing what the product can do—or what the video can do?

Before buying from an unfamiliar seller, give your AI assistant the product name and store’s website. Try:

Help me research this seller and product. Find independent reviews, customer photos, return terms and signs the product may not match the ad. Link to your sources and tell me what you can’t verify.

Check the sources yourself. AI can misread reviews or send you to the wrong place. If it can’t browse, ask for a checklist instead.

Look for:

  • Customer photos: Does it look as good outside the ad?

  • Return terms: Can you return it, and who pays shipping?

  • Seller reputation: Search the store’s name with “reviews,” “complaints” or “refund.”

And remember: A countdown clock is not a shopping emergency.

Costume crisis? Try this.

Give me five funny Halloween costumes using clothes and household items I already own. Keep extra purchases under $20 per costume and include a one-line explanation.

Because “Wait, what are you supposed to be?” deserves an answer.

Final Bot Thought

Let the bot investigate. Keep a human eye on the evidence.

And if the mask looks like a movie prop but costs less than the popcorn? Maybe don’t bet your Halloween on it. 👻
