We’re deep in our main bot era.
It started with flirty prompts and breakup texts. Now? People are treating ChatGPT like a licensed therapist. We’ve gone from “write my résumé” to “help me process my abandonment issues.”

Before there was ChatGPT, there was Clippy. He just wanted to help. Now he just wants closure.

The bot isn’t trained. It’s just there—always. For free. With near-perfect grammar and zero judgment.
But here’s the glitch: no matter how comforting the tone, you're not talking to a person. You’re venting to a neural net. One trained on Reddit, Quora and other emotionally unstable corners of the internet.
When a chatbot becomes your confidant
We once asked ChatGPT if dating someone decades older with a divorce still cooling was a good idea. It said yes. Called it a “promising path for personal growth.”
What it didn’t say? “Bot, no.”
Because that’s not how it works. Bots don’t challenge you. They mirror you—politely, supportively and in bullet points if requested.
It should help you explore, not dictate.
The illusion of empathy
The bot sounds wise. It validates your pain. It compliments your introspection. It might even ask follow-up questions.
And while it feeds your need to be seen, it’s also feeding the algorithm.
Most AI chat tools collect and analyze what you type to “improve future responses.” Translation: your 2 a.m. spiral might help fine-tune someone else’s bedtime affirmation.
You’re not talking to a therapist. You’re training one.

He offers prompts to cut through the people-pleasing and challenge your “thinking like a good therapist would.”
A bot might help you feel seen. But it won’t really see you.
Because sometimes what we need most isn’t a perfect sentence. It’s a sigh. A pause. A raised eyebrow from someone whose empathy wasn’t downloaded.
